The company has a great sense of design, and the app is self-explanatory, and thus very easy to use. Lookout also innovates, with features like Signal Flare and the new, which can potentially detect that your phone is stolen before you do. It's a front-runner, but it still hasn't managed to unseat Editors' Choice, which offers faster scanning and more features, such as app locking. Lookout comes in free or Premium flavors.
The free subscription gives you four features: anti-malware protection, backup of contacts, remote Locate, and a remotely triggered Scream alarm. For $2.99 per month, or $29.99 annually, Lookout Premium adds backup of photos and call history, safe browsing, a Privacy Advisor that scans your phone for apps that might leak your information, remote Lock and Wipe capabilities, and the new Theft Alerts feature which alerts you to unusual behavior on your Android. Solid Antivirus Detection PCMag relies on third-party testing agencies like AV-Test to rate malware detection on Android. Unfortunately, Lookout hasn't participated in testing since, when it detected 99.4 percent of malware samples. In my testing, it took an average of 31 seconds to scan my. This is significantly faster than most other Android antivirus apps, but longer than it takes Bitdefender Mobile Security and Antivirus. During a scan, Lookout uses its repository of user data to quickly identify safe apps with cloud-based scanning, as Bitdefender does. If Lookout finds something unique, like a new update to a previously safe app or something nefarious like, it switches into the local Deepscan mode.
This is the best of both worlds: the speed of cloud-based scanning and the constant protection of a local scan. I had the Usemon CPU usage monitor app to measure the impact of a scan in more quantifiable terms. In my testing, I measured CPU and RAM usage with 12 apps running before and during a Lookout scan. During a scan, Lookout barely touched the RAM resources, but it did drive the CPU usage from 36 percent to 68 percent. Despite all that going on, Lookout doesn't affect your phone's behavior. With a scan running in the background, along with 12 other apps, still runs exceptionally smoothly. Privacy Advisor and Adware It's often hard to figure out what information a given app can access.
Lookout's Privacy Advisor can help. It runs a quick scan of your device and categorizes your apps by what information they can access. You can tap each app to read a bit more about why it's accessing the information. For example, 12 of my apps can access my location information. I might be okay with Google Maps getting that data, but maybe I'll remove other apps I don't think need to know where I am. Privacy Advisor is a handy tool, but I'm always hungry for more insight into my apps' behavior.
Goes further, letting me see whether apps are encrypting my data and to which country they are sending it. Lookout recently announced an initiative to flag applications that use aggressive advertising as. The company aims to protect consumers from applications that might, for example, replace your ringtone with an advertisement without your express permission. It's a strong response against applications that aren't malicious but that aren't really playing nice, either. To my knowledge, it's unique among security apps.
